Are you a recruitment consultant considering a career move? Or a newbie wanting to get into the recruitment world? Whether you’re looking for new challenges, a better work environment, or more growth opportunities, choosing the right recruitment company is crucial for you to succeed. We’ve put together a few tips to make sure you make the right decision!
1. Assess Your Career Goals and Values
Think about your career goals and values.
- What are your long-term career aspirations?
- What kind of company culture do you thrive in?
- Which recruitment niches or industries are you passionate about or have experience in?
- How important is career progression?
Understanding what you want will help you identify companies that align with your career vision. So many recruiters jump into the ‘big name’ companies, just because they are well known, and don’t actually do any research. Which brings me on to my next point…
2. Research Potential Employers
Once you have a clear idea of your goals, start researching the agencies.
- Company Websites: Explore their mission, values, and service offerings. Check if they align with your interests and goals.
- Social Media: Follow the agencies on LinkedIn, and other platforms if they have it. Look for posts about company culture, employee achievements, client success stories, and advice blogs. If it’s a decent company, they are going to want to shout about their employees. I always say;- a company’s social media tells you a lot!
- Speak to the current Employees: No one knows the company better than their current employees. The employees have no reason to lie to you, so go straight to the source and ask for advice/reviews on what it’s like to work there! We ALWAYS get our employees to talk to the person interested in joining us so they get an honest feel for our company and our people.
Questions you can ask current Employees are…
- What are the day-to-day work experiences and challenges?
- Are there any opportunities for growth and professional development?
- What is the management style and support like?
- What is the current benefits package?
3. Evaluate Company Culture
Company culture is huge. This is something you need to take into consideration,- and to do this, here are some pointers below…
- Work Environment: Do they promote a collaborative and supportive environment? Look for signs of teamwork and open communication.
- Company Values: Ensure the company’s values resonate with your own.
- Employee Engagement: Check if the company invests in employee well-being and engagement through events, training, and other initiatives/incentives.
4. Consider the Company’s Reputation
You can find out about an agency’s reputation by speaking to people in the industry, looking for testimonials from clients and candidates, and seeing how long have they been in business. If a company has been going for a long time, (like us 22 years!) then more often than not it will have a good reputation for it to be able to last that long, especially as an SME.
5. Assess the Benefits
While culture and values are crucial, we all want to know the benefits right?! At the end of the day, no one works for free…
- Salary Packages: Ensure the salary meets your expectations and industry standards.
- Benefits: Compare the incentives, the commission, the bonus scheme, and the well-being benefits. See what is most important to you. Is it a high basic or more incentives and benefits? Don’t be afraid to ask the benefits questions too, if you’ve found your dream company but it’s missing a crucial benefit for you, then ask, they may accommodate you.
6. Growth Opportunities
A good recruitment company should offer ample opportunities for career growth.
- Training and Development: Look for companies that invest in continuous learning and development.
- Career Pathways: Ensure there are clear paths for advancement within the company.
7. Trust Your Instincts
After gathering all the information, trust your instincts. Reflect on:
- Which company excites you the most?
- Where do you see yourself fitting in and thriving?
- Which environment aligns best with your personality and career goals?
Sometimes, your gut feeling can guide you toward the best decision.
And now after all that advice, on to the important part…
